Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

The dawn of a new year signifies refreshed opportunities and critical tax obligations. January 2026 is marked by pivotal tax due dates tailored for individuals, inclusive of estimated tax payments, mandated tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. It’s time to assess your fiscal duties and orchestrate an effective plan to meet them head-on.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Consultation
As the tax season unfurls, it's paramount to secure your tax preparation appointment promptly. This proactive step is vital to avoid the last-minute scramble and ensure you're not lost in the tax filing dash. Leveraging expert advice early can clarify your fiscal pathway.

January 12 - Mandatory Tip Reporting
Employees generating over $20 in tips in December are obligated to report these to their employer by January 12. Utilize IRS Form 4070 or an equivalent personal statement, encompassing essential details such as name, address, Social Security number, employer's particulars, reporting period, and total received tips. Employers will duly withhold FICA and income taxes from regular wages based on these reports. Should regular wages fall short, the uncollected withholding will be annotated in box 8 of your W-2 form, necessitating personal settlement upon filing your annual return.

January 15 - Fourth Quarter Estimated Tax Payment
Secure your compliance by making the fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year no later than January 15. Absent this, to avert penalties, ensure your 2025 return is filed with complete payment by February 2, 2026.

Consideration of Weekends & Holidays:
Should any due date coincide with weekends or legal holidays, the deadline is conveniently extended to the next business day.

Disaster Area Filing Extensions:
Awaiting disaster assistance? Tax deadline extensions are applicable within designated disaster areas. Regularly consult FEMA and IRS websites for designation statuses and pertinent extensions:
