Essential June 2026 Tax Deadlines for Professionals and Business Owners

Summer is arriving in Cumming, Georgia, but for dual-income professionals, real estate agents, and service-based business owners, June brings a wave of critical tax deadlines. At Get Balanced CPA, we know how easy it is to overlook mid-year tax obligations when you are busy running a medical practice or managing client projects. Our goal is to provide clarity and keep your financials on track. Let us walk through the essential individual tax deadlines for June 2026 so you can stay compliant, minimize stress, and reduce your end-of-year tax burden.

June 15: The Q2 Estimated Tax Deadline

If you are a contractor, attorney, or run a dental office, this is arguably the most important date on your summer calendar. The U.S. operates on a "pay-as-you-earn" tax system. For those whose income is not subject to standard payroll withholding, Q2 estimated tax payments are due on June 15, 2026.

Avoiding Underpayment Penalties

Failing to pay enough throughout the year can trigger an underpayment penalty, which the IRS calculates quarterly. Fortunately, the law provides "safe harbor" rules to help you avoid these penalties. You are generally safe if your prepayments equal at least 90% of your current year's tax liability or 100% of your prior year's tax liability.

For high earners, the threshold changes. If your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) last year exceeded $150,000 (or $75,000 if married filing separately), the prior-year safe harbor jumps to 110%. If you have experienced a significant income event recently—like a major real estate sale or a spike in consulting revenue—we highly recommend reviewing these estimates with our team to ensure your prepayments are adequate. State rules for safe harbors often differ, so local guidance is vital.

Important Reporting Deadlines: IRAs and Tips

June brings two specific reporting requirements that affect retirement planning and payroll withholding.

June 1: Form 5498 for IRAs

By June 1, IRA trustees must issue Form 5498. This form provides IRA owners with the fair market value (FMV) of their accounts as of December 31, 2025. This valuation dictates the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) that must be taken if you are age 73 or older in 2026.

June 10: Tip Reporting

If your service-based business employs staff who receive tips, or if you earn tips yourself, mark June 10 on your calendar. Employees receiving more than $20 in tips during May must report them to their employer. This ensures proper FICA and income tax withholding from regular wages.

Filing Extensions for Taxpayers Living Abroad

For U.S. citizens and resident aliens living and working outside the United States and Puerto Rico, June 15 is the deadline to file your 2025 income tax return and pay any tax due. If your return is not ready, you can file Form 4868 to secure a four-month extension to October 15.

Caution: An extension to file is never an extension to pay. If you expect a tax bill, estimate the amount and pay it with your extension request. Delaying your filing because you owe money is a costly mistake. The late filing penalty is a steep 5% per month (up to 25%). Establishing a long-term installment agreement is a much smarter move than absorbing unforced penalties.

Military members in combat zones receive automatic 180-day extensions. Additionally, taxpayers impacted by the terrorist attacks in Israel throughout 2024 and 2025 have an extended deadline of September 30, 2026, to file and pay taxes otherwise due between September 30, 2025, and September 30, 2026.

Navigating Disaster Area Extensions

Standard IRS rules dictate that if a tax due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically shifts to the next business day. However, severe weather and natural disasters can alter these timelines significantly. When the government designates a region as a disaster area, filing and payment deadlines are extended to provide relief.
