February 2026 Tax Deadlines and Tips for Individuals

Welcome to your February 2026 tax planning guide, designed to help you stay ahead of important tax deadlines. This article covers essential tax responsibilities such as estimated payments, reporting tips income, and updating W-4 exemptions.

February 2: Deadline for Last Estimated Tax Payment

If you missed making your final estimated tax payment by January 15, you have the option to file your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) along with any taxes owed by February 2. Meeting this deadline can prevent penalties associated with late payments. Should February 2 not be feasible, aim for the April 15 deadline to avoid further issues.

February 10: Reporting Tips for Employees

Employees who earned $20 or more in tips during January must report these to their employer. You can complete this requirement using IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement containing your signature, personal and employer details, and the total tips amount. Employers will then deduct FICA taxes and income tax withholding from your regular salary. If outstanding amounts remain, they’ll be reflected in box 8 of your W-2 for later settlement with your annual return.

February 17: Update Your W-4 for Withholding Exemptions

If you claimed a withholding exemption on last year's W-4, make sure to submit a new Form W-4 to your employer by February 17 to maintain your exemption status for another year.

Important Extensions: Weekends, Holidays, and Disaster Areas

When a due date coincides with a weekend or public holiday, expect it to roll over to the next business day. Additionally, in the case of a federally declared disaster area, individuals should check FEMA’s official site or the IRS’s tax relief page to learn about possible deadline extensions.
