July 2026 Tax Deadlines for Service-Based Businesses

For service-based entrepreneurs—from real estate professionals to medical practice owners—summer should be a time to recalibrate and focus on growth. However, closing out the second quarter means July brings essential payroll, benefit plan, and tax deposit deadlines. At Get Balanced CPA, we know managing these compliance dates can drain the time you should spend on your clients and operations. To help keep your financial picture clear and your tax burden minimized, we have outlined the critical business due dates for July 2026.

Early July Reminders for Pension and Profit-Sharing Plans

If your practice maintains an employee benefit plan, such as a pension, profit-sharing, or stock bonus plan, your administrative responsibilities begin early. By July 1, self-employed individuals and business owners need to assess whether they must file Form 5500 or 5500-EZ for the 2025 calendar year. While the actual filing deadline is at the end of the month, evaluating your requirements early gives our team time to gather data and prepare the return. This proactive tax planning is especially critical for growing dental offices, law firms, and contractors who recently expanded their team benefits.

Mid-Month Payroll and Nonpayroll Deposit Rules

Long exposure road

By July 15, businesses subject to the monthly deposit rule must handle their payroll-related tax liabilities. You need to deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for payments processed in June. Additionally, if you manage nonpayroll withholding—such as backup withholding or withholding on pensions and annuities—those deposits are also due on July 15 under the monthly schedule. Staying ahead of these payroll taxes helps maintain predictable cash flow and avoids unnecessary IRS penalties, ensuring your operations remain smooth.

Crucial Quarter-End Filings and FUTA Deadlines

July 31 is the heaviest compliance day of the month. All employers must file Form 941, the Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return, for the second quarter of 2026. You must deposit or pay any undeposited tax under the accuracy of deposit rules. If your Q2 tax liability is under $2,500, you are permitted to pay it in full with a timely filed return. Alternatively, if you deposited your taxes in full and on time throughout the quarter, you receive an automatic extension until August 10 to file the return itself.

Furthermore, July 31 is the absolute final deadline to file Form 5500 or 5500-EZ for calendar year 2025 benefit plans. If your firm operates on a fiscal year, this form is due by the last day of the seventh month following the end of your plan year. Finally, do not overlook your Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA). If your FUTA liability through June exceeds $500, that deposit is also due by month-end.

Handling Weekend Roll-Overs and Disaster Area Extensions

Tax deadlines are generally strict, but there are a few built-in flexibilities. If any tax due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically pushed to the next business day that is not a holiday.

Additionally, businesses located in federally declared disaster zones often receive automatic filing and payment extensions. If your operations have been impacted by severe weather, check the current geographic extensions to see if your firm qualifies for relief. You can verify whether your area has been designated a disaster zone and find specific extension dates by visiting these official resources:
